Questions, answered.
Clear, considered answers about Oregon’s licensed psilocybin services and the support around them.
What is psilocybin therapy?
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms. In Oregon, licensed psilocybin services include preparation, a supported administration session at a licensed service center, and integration afterward. Some people call this “psilocybin therapy,” although licensed facilitation has its own legal scope and does not automatically include psychotherapy. At Flight Guide, we focus on pattern breaking, new pattern forming, and taking a coaching approach, versus a “psychotherapy” approach.
What does a psilocybin experience feel like?
Every experience is different. You may notice changes in perception, vivid imagery, strong emotions, meaningful memories, or a shift in how you relate to yourself and the world. Some moments may feel peaceful or deeply connected; others can be uncomfortable or confusing. We talk through the range of possibilities beforehand so you have a foundation of trust and practical tools to draw on.
How many psilocybin sessions might I need?
There is no universal number. Some people find one session meaningful, while others choose to return to the work over time (example: 2-3 sessions over the course of a year). The right pace depends on your goals, health history, response, and what emerges during integration. We evaluate next steps together rather than assuming that more medicine is always better.
What concerns is psilocybin being studied for?
Researchers are studying psilocybin-assisted approaches for depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and distress associated with serious illness, among other concerns. Findings are extremely promising in some areas, and research is still developing, while outcomes vary. Oregon’s licensed services are a regulated wellness offering; they are not an FDA-approved treatment for these conditions - yet.
Is psilocybin safe, and how do I know if I am eligible?
Safety begins with an honest conversation about your physical health, mental health, medications, supplements, any recreational drug/alcohol use, and your current support system. Psilocybin can cause intense psychological experiences and temporary physical effects, including nausea, changes in blood pressure, and anxiety. Oregon screening requirements include exclusions for certain circumstances, including lithium use within the previous 30 days, a history of active psychosis, and current thoughts of harming yourself or others. We review your situation and, when appropriate, encourage consultation with your healthcare provider. At Flight Guide, we work with your current medical and mental health team(s) where appropriate for holistic care.
What if I have never used psychedelics before?
You are welcome here. Many people exploring psilocybin for the first time have thoughtful questions and understandable uncertainty. Preparation gives us time to talk about your intentions, expectations, boundaries, and the practical details of the day. You will have a licensed facilitator present throughout the administration session, and the entire arc of your preparation and integration.
Will I lose control during the experience?
Psilocybin can change your sense of time, body, and surroundings, and it may become difficult to direct the experience in the way you normally would. You retain the right to be treated with dignity, to have your boundaries respected, and to receive support. Before the session, we discuss consent, supportive touch, communication, and how I will respond if you need reassurance or assistance.
What happens if I have a difficult experience?
Difficult moments can include fear, grief, confusion, or the resurfacing of painful memories. My role is to help you stay physically safe, offer calm support, and respond to what you need in the moment. We prepare for these possibilities in advance and make space afterward to process what happened. Even “difficult experiences” can lead to promising outcomes. As we work together during the preparation phase of your program, we will cover how to lean on the tools we will teach you to navigate your journey to create the best possible experience.
What does a licensed psilocybin facilitator do?
A licensed facilitator supports you through preparation, the administration session, and integration. During the medicine session, I remain present, monitor your well-being, and help maintain a safe and supportive environment. My approach is informed by my military service and my work with veterans, first responders, and people navigating major life transitions. Your choices, boundaries, and personal beliefs guide the process.
How do I prepare for a psilocybin experience?
Preparation starts well before the administration day. We discuss your intentions, medical and medication history, emotional readiness, support network, and expectations. I may suggest journaling, reflection, rest, and practical changes to your schedule, and what you are consuming with your mouth, eyes, and ears, so you have room for the experience. We also complete Oregon’s required consent, safety, and transportation planning. Any medication changes should be discussed with the prescribing clinician.
What is integration, and why does it matter?
Integration is the process of making sense of what you experienced and deciding what deserves a place, and what needs to go, in your everyday life. It can involve reflection, honest conversations, new habits, discontinuing patterns that no longer serve you, boundaries, or continued support. Integration is the art of implementing calibrative changes to move you closer to your goals and the north star of what you are trying to achieve for yourself and your life. Flight Guide’s 12-week preparation and integration approach creates space to do this work before and after the administration session, with practical steps that fit your life.
How long does a psilocybin experience last?
The main effects commonly last around four to six hours, though timing varies with the individual, product, and dose. You should plan for a longer appointment at the licensed service center, including arrival, monitoring, and a safe departure. We will review your specific schedule before the session. A sample schedule may look like 9 AM arrival, with a 5 PM departure. Oregon law requires that we keep clients for a minimum of six hours if they have had 50mg of psilocybin.
Can psilocybin fit with my faith or spiritual beliefs?
Yes. People come to this work with many different spiritual, religious, and secular perspectives. Your beliefs and values deserve respect. If faith, prayer, ceremony, or personal meaning are important to you, we can discuss how to honor them within the boundaries of Oregon’s licensed service model. I will never impose a belief system or interpretation on your experience. For many clients who are faith-based, this experience often enhances their beliefs.
Is psilocybin legal in Oregon? Do I need a prescription?
Oregon allows adults 21 and older to access psilocybin services through licensed facilitators and licensed service centers. A prescription or medical referral is not required. Psilocybin remains illegal under federal law, and Oregon’s program has specific rules for where products may be purchased and consumed. We will explain the licensed process before you book.
How much does psilocybin facilitation cost, and does insurance cover it?
Your total investment depends on the service package, preparation and integration support, service-center costs, and other arrangements. We will provide a clear breakdown before you commit. Insurance does not cover Oregon psilocybin services. You can view our current packages and pricing here.
Can I travel to Oregon from another state or country?
Yes. Oregon does not require you to be a state or country resident to access licensed psilocybin services, provided you meet the program’s eligibility requirements. If you are traveling, we can discuss timing, lodging, local transportation, and how to create enough space for rest and integration. Psilocybin products must remain within the licensed service framework and cannot be taken home. Flight Guide has available negotiated rates with a local hotel and spa, so you have the best pricing and lodging experience available.
What medications, supplements, or substances might interact with psilocybin?
Please disclose all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, supplements, and recreational substances during screening. Some medications may change the intensity of a psilocybin experience or create additional risks. Lithium is a particularly important safety concern and is addressed in Oregon eligibility screening. Other substances, including certain antidepressants and stimulants, warrant individualized review. Psilocybin primarily acts at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors; serious interactions, including serotonin toxicity in some combinations, require careful medical consideration. Caffeine and nicotine may increase physical activation or anxiety for some people. Never stop or adjust prescribed medication without speaking to your prescriber.
Will my participation be private and confidential?
Privacy matters, especially when your work or personal circumstances make discretion essential. Oregon’s licensed program establishes confidentiality rights and record-protection requirements, with specific legal exceptions and state reporting rules. We will explain what information is collected, how it is protected, and when disclosure may be required. You can ask questions about privacy before sharing sensitive details. At Flight Guide, we hold confidentiality in the highest regard. You can rest assured that all details of your visit will be kept private.
What happens after the session? Can I return to normal activities immediately?
Plan to give yourself time to rest. Oregon requires a transportation plan, and you should not drive yourself home after consuming psilocybin. Many people benefit from keeping the remainder of the day free of work, travel demands, loud noises, and major decisions. However, you will be able to return to your normal activities the day following, should you choose to do so. Some clients report a slight headache the day following. If logistically possible, it’s recommended to give yourself a day or two after to fully recover and integrate the experience before jumping back into your normal routine.
Can psilocybin help with PTSD, depression, anxiety, or addiction?
Research is exploring psilocybin-assisted approaches for several mental health and substance-use concerns. Many participants in clinical studies report meaningful improvement, while some do not, and a very few experience adverse effects. Your personal history and goals deserve careful attention. I can help you explore whether Oregon’s licensed service model may be appropriate, while your healthcare team remains responsible for diagnosing and treating medical conditions. It’s worth noting here that you do not need a diagnosis to benefit from a psilocybin session. Exploring your consciousness is also a completely valid reason to book a journey.
What is the difference between a licensed facilitator and a psychedelic therapist?
A licensed Oregon psilocybin facilitator is trained and authorized to provide regulated psilocybin services, as well as preparation and integration programming and coaching. A psychotherapist holds a separate professional license to provide mental health treatment in the traditional medical/mental health sense you are probably aware of (talk therapy). Some professionals hold both credentials, but a facilitator license alone does not authorize psychotherapy or medical treatment. I will be clear about the services I provide and when another professional may be an important part of your support team. It is important to note that someone licensed as a Doctor, Nurse, or Therapist does NOT mean they understand or are trained in psychedelic therapies and services. Psychedelics are a new and emerging modality to the western medical system. It is still very rare to find medical teams that understand these services, or have had experience with them themselves. If you would like me to speak with your medical team, I am happy to do so, and to provide them with research.
What is the difference between microdosing and a full psilocybin journey?
Microdosing usually refers to taking a small amount intended to produce little or no noticeable psychedelic effect. A full administration session involves a dose that may produce significant changes in perception, emotion, and awareness. Evidence for the benefits of microdosing remains limited and mixed, although I have personally witnessed the results and qualitative feedback from hundreds of clients and fellow facilitators as to the benefits of both. Oregon’s licensed service model requires psilocybin consumption at a licensed service center under facilitator supervision, including for small doses.
